What is the best way to use facebook and fan pages for internet marketing without spamming your friends and appearing as if the only reason you are there is to market your products?

First and foremost, you have to understand your customers. E.g. most Malaysians will pay attention to discount message. I would advice my customers to offer discount in order to attract buyers on Facebook, especially during festival. As long as a company in Malaysia is having a attractive discount, Facebook users will automatically shared.
Another way is running a contest to engage Facebook users. E.g Slimming contest. Give away 5 - 10 boxes of slimming sets to Facebook users with requirements of at least 100 friends, post everything the slimming progress on their walls, etc. It helps in spreading the company contest and your products. And it helps in word of mouth marketing.
Facebook is a place for socialize, to have fun, to have interesting, funny sharing. Facebook Wall is a great way to do marketing as well. You can create a funny and interesting video to let Facebook users to spread. A very good example is video commercial from Thailand. Those videos are funny, I shared a lot with my friends!
