A lot of companies don't even know what social media marketing is but they listen to those so-called social media experts to create Facebook Fan Pages, to create Twitter accounts, to create Linkedin accounts just to increase the numbers of their fans, followers and connections. Those so-called social media experts will advice you to publish your content and wait for your potential customers to go to your websites and buy from you.
This is definitely wrong! Social media marketing is applying marketing strategies on social networking sites. Some of those social media experts don't even know what marketing strategies to use.

If you are doing social media marketing now, ask yourselves – Do you have goals? Please don't tell me Increasing sales are your social media marketing goals. Increasing sales are your company goals but not your social media marketing goals. Increasing brand awareness, reputation management, increasing engagement level with customers, increasing relevant visitors traffic are your social media marketing goals. You have to differentiate between company goals and social media marketing goals.
No matter what we do, we need to plan. Same goes to your social media marketing. You must know what do to, how to do, where to do and how long you going to achieve your goals.
4) You don't offer quality products or services
Social media marketing is double-edged sword. Regardless if you able to provide quality products or services, people still are helping you to spread. The only difference is either they praise or they critic your products or services.

You have to understand them. What trigger them to spread your messages? What trigger them to buy your products or services? How to engage them? How to communicate with them?
I hate people when they tag me on Facebook to promote their products or services without my permission. I straight away report them and block them without any mercy. I hate those people who sell me something not even say "hi" to me when they pop up on Facebook chat. If you don't know how to respect people, don't do social media marketing.
When people comment on your Facebook Fan Pages wall with negative feedbacks, please don't delete them. You have to respect their rights and turn those angry customers to your long term customers. Solve their problem immediately. Deleting their comments will make them feel even frustrated.
7) You force social media to suit your company policy
It is your companies to change to suit social media marketing not the other way round. Social media marketing is a new world marketing strategy; you have to change your old world company policy to suit it.
8) You are control freaks
You have to let go your staff to communicate, to talk, to engage with your customers on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. You guide them with company social media policy but not control them.
9) You just want to increase sales for your companies

Maxis and Shinjiru are two top companies in Malaysia in their own industry. As you can see the images above, people are getting impatient; they won't call to ask your support teams to solve their problems. They will either post their problems on your Facebook Pages or your blogs.
And please don't reply "Please call us or please submit tickets to our support team". They want to solve their problems NOW on Facebook or your blogs, they don't want to call to submit tickets. Giving support through Facebook, Twitter or blog is a new world customer support.
Social media marketing is not about increasing sales; it is about handling your customers, communicating and engaging them. If you fail to handle them, you won't get any sales at all!!!
10) You 100% depend on your social media experts to do all the job for you
I know that there are a lot of social media experts in the market but you make big mistakes if you 100% depends on them. As I told before, social media marketing is about handling your customers on social networking sites. What make you think those social media experts know your products or services or your companies more than you do? Bear in mind that social media is just another facet of marketing and customer service.
