I still remember a TV commercial from KFC in Malaysia advertise a new fried chicken package. Those fried chicken (12 of them) in the TV commercial were very large and the price is less than RM10.00 (USD3.00). My friend and I (two people) decided to visit KFC and enjoy the 12 friend chickens, but what we got was VERY SMALL AND TINY chicken which a 5 years old boy can finish them by himself alone.Both of us laugh out loud. I don't know what will happen if they do the same thing again in today's world? I believe people are getting smarter, if they feel cheated, they will spread online and the whole world knows about it.

An Idea for Hotel Positioning Strategy in Malaysia - A Director of Romance

Hire a Director of Romance or Romance Planner for your hotel? This is first time I heard of it through a TV programme.

Las Ventanas Al Paraiso Resort in Mexico is one of the finest and most expensive resort in the world. One of the unique selling point (which a lot of hotels in Malaysia don't have) Las Ventanas Al Paraiso Resort is they hire a Director of Romance to arrange and create a romantic environment for couples. If you want to know what exactly a Director of Romance or Romance Planner do, watch the video below.

I think this is a good strategy for a Malaysian hotel to position itself as a Romantic hotel so that when couples (either local or foreign) wants to have honeymoon, anniversary, etc, they will think of the hotel first. I know that most hotels in Malaysia have event managers, event organisers or event planners but a Director of Romance or a Romance Planner is more specific and focus on creating romantic environment for couples. The hotel is able to differentiate itself from other hotels in Malaysia.

I believe most girls and women like romantic environment, don't you think so?

PR Newswire did a research on content (for them is press release). The more multimedia you put in your content, the more views or more traffic you will get. This is so true. Previously when I started this blog, I put more text than images, videos, etc. I got a response from my readers said that I should put more images and videos and I do. My blog traffic does increase because it.

As you can see the infographic from PR Newswire below, 77% increase if you put photos, videos, documents, powerpoint, excel, PDF, etc.

How to Differentiate Yourself from Other Social Media Marketers in Malaysia

Last week, I attended few social media training previews and events in Malaysia. These are what I learnt.

- The benefits of using social media
- How to register social networking sites, e.g Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin
- How to setup Facebook Fan Pages, Twitter accounts and Linkedin groups
- How to setup blogs
- The benefits of blogging, etc

I have to say, almost all social media marketers in Malaysia teach the same things and I believe those topics above are not what Malaysians want anymore. It may work 5 - 10 years ago, but not for today's world because a lot of Malaysians already know it except some baby boomers don't know. If they don't know, they can simply go to google and search. If you still teaching the same things, not only it doesn't work for a lot people and you can't differentiate yourself to other social media marketers.

So, how to differentiate yourself from other social media marketers? My answer is FOCUS ON CONTENT, content for Malaysians (if your market is Malaysia). Producing a quality content to engage people is challenging. It is even more challenging if you want your users to spread your content (because word of mouth marketing is still the best advertising, even for internet marketing).

For example :
- If you want to run discounts on Facebook pages, what are the pricing strategies that really make people take action to buy and spread your message.
- How to produce funny and interesting videos so that people will spread them?
- What kinds of content work or not work in Malaysia?
- Which types of media Malaysians prefer? Texts, images or videos?
- What to post on Facebook wall, twitter and linkedin will trigger people to talk to you.
- etc.

Show your audience with proven results so that it makes your training even more convincing.

Basically Malaysians know how to use Facebook, how to tweet and how to communicate on Linkedin, but they need to know how to produce great content to spread their businesses, their products or their brands.

It's time for social media marketers in Malaysia to move to next level. Don't you agree?
