A Social Media Marketing Important Question – Where are they?

Saturday, 12 May 2012 Category Social Media Marketing
Tweet

Social media marketing is about listening and joining conversation to engage and build relationship with people to generate sales. There is one important question we need to ask ourselves after we have set our social media marketing goals is "WHERE ARE THEY?"

Internet is huge. It has a lot of social networking sites, e.g Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, Google+ and the latest Pinterest. But due to limited resources of one company, especially for Small and Medium Enterprises, we can't appear on every single social networking site. So the question is where is your target market? Is your Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin or Google Plus your target social networking sites? Or Youtube? Or Forum? Or even none of them? You need to get them on the right social networking site.

Imagine this situation – your build your Facebook Fan Page, you spend 2 hours to generate content per day and post on Facebook but... your company sales never go up! Finally you realize that Facebook is a not suitable platform for you. You waste your time and money.

From my personal experience, I have a customer who has customers are mostly lawyers and doctors. They don't even have Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin accounts. We have to use Youtube (video marketing) and email to engage them.

Below are some tools that you can use to search your markets:

1) Social Mention
Social mention is a real time social search. It is a social media search platform that aggregates user generated content from across the web into a single stream of information. It monitors 80+ social media properties directly including: Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube, Digg, Google etc. All you have to do is put in your keywords and social mention will search the whole internet for you whoever mentions the keywords that you put in. You can even select social media sources for your keywords. It is a very powerful tool to search your target market online.

We tried to search by using keyword Legoland Malaysia and below is the result. As you can see, Twitter is the best sources for you to get in and engage with people who interested in Legoland Malaysia.

2) Hootsuite Search (Twitter + Facebook)
Hootsuite is a Social Media Dashboard for you to manage your social media account, e.g Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. You can use Hootsuite to create streams for the keywords that you would like to search. Below is the sample of a stream for keyword Legoland Malaysia and Lego Malaysia.

3) Whos Talkin
WhosTalkin.com is a social media search tool that allows users to search for conversations surrounding the topics that they care about most. They search and sorting algorithms combine data taken from over 60 of the internet's most popular social media gateways. They take this data and display it to you through our carefully designed interface that harnesses the power of AJAX to give you a seamlessly well-organized user experience.

4) Google Search, Blog,  Plus Search
Google Plus search is another very powerful tool to search if your target market is on Google Plus. We have tried to search on Google Plus by using keyword – Legoland Malaysia and there are some people mentions on Legoland Malaysia. But compared to Twitter, Google+ has less people. Not only Google Plus Search, you can use Google Search, Google Blog Search to check your target market as well. Please visit Social Search Guide: 40+ Social Search Engines.

Hope this blog post helps you in searching your target market.

Maxis:"We don't have any plan to improve!!!"

Monday, 07 May 2012 Category Current Issues
Tweet

I shared a post on 29 October 2011 regarding Maxis Communication bad services. After 7 months of struggling to talk, to make complaints to them, finally I got the answer from Maxis said:"We don't have any plan to improve their services!".

noplantoimproveit

Maxis is one of the biggest telecommunication companies in Malaysia and I just don't believe that this is their quality of customer service! I believe the reason is I am only one customer, for them I am not important at all, while there are a lot of other Maxis customers, why should they care?

What would you think about my situation? Or if you agree or experienced the same thing before, please share this post to let them know they should improve their quality of services.

Mainstream Media Malaysia - Are they still in control?

Friday, 04 May 2012 Category Social Media Marketing
Tweet

Malaysia just have another rally called Bersih 3.0 on 28th April 2012. I don't want to talk about the rally here since that is not my focus, if you would like to know more, you can click Bersih 3.0 to read it.

While offline, Malaysians and policemen having fight at Kuala Lumpur, there is another fight which was going on at the same time - Social Media War.

pdrmandmalaysiavideoright

Both Malaysians and Royal Malaysia Police kept uploading videos to show the world what happened on Bersih 3.0. When you search on Youtube Bersih 3.0, you can get a lot of videos while for Royal Malaysia Police videos are here (they are smarter in this rally).

So, my question is if mainstream is so powerful to influence Malaysians, why would Royal Malaysia Police needs to take their videos to post on Facebook and fight with normal people? They do understand that the influential power of social networking sites, e.g Facebook, Twitter and Youtube. They do understand mainstream media are not in control now. In fact, the trust Malaysians to mainstream on Bersih 3.0 issue dropped.

A lot of Facebook users took photos of local newspapers and posted on Facebook. Most people said that local newspapers tell lies. This is something that I don't understand. While a lot of people attended the rally Bersih 3.0, they personally saw what happened but some of the local newspapers still can tell lie??

One of the hottest issue is (British Broadcasting Corporation) BBC and Astro (Malaysian direct broadcast satellite (DBS) Pay TV service). Astro censored BBC news in Malaysia on Bersih 3.0 rally. Before internet era, we may not able to know it, but now the whole world know about this issue (one person posted on Facebook). You can view the video below.

British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has demanded an explanation from Astro for snipping off 30 seconds of its two-minute news clip.

At a certain level, mainstream media are still in control. But, the more they control, the less trust Malaysians can give them. The future is about sharing and transparent. Because of internet, human behaviours changed.

Update on 5th May 2012

For your information, according to World Press Index 2012, Malaysia rank 122 out of 179! You can download the full report here.
