When comes to do social media marketing on social networking sites e.g Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, etc. most Social Media Consultants advise you to add as many friends as you can on social networking sites, then create groups and draw all of your friends to your groups. But the question is, how many of the friends you add are your targeted market? How many of them really needs your services and products?
There is one great way to build your targeted markets on this non-targeted social networking sites - Do it the reversed way.
My way to advise my customers to do social media marketing is join groups first then build their friendship later.
For example, my industry is internet marketing. I would join groups that related to SEO, SEM, Social Media Marketing on Facebook and Linkedin (for Twitter, I just need to search and read people's tweets, I will know the people I want to add are my targeted market), join conversations within the groups, help people who have questions related to internet marketing. Once I have talked to them, then I add them as my friends, almost 99% of them are happy to be my friends because I have already built relationships with them. With this tactics, I can build high targeted market even on non-targeted social networking sites.
Yes, it is slow but it is worth for long term! When you have new products or services, you already have a highly targeted customer ldatabase to market without wasting time to look for new customers.
